The Asian Seminary of Christian ministries serves the leadership formation needs of Christians in Asia and the Pacific region to prepare God?s people for works of service that the body of Christ may be built up in fulfillment of the Great Commissions of our Lord Jesus Christ.
ASCM theology of ministry is geared towards developing a passion for God, Spirit filled empowerment, biblical doctrine emphasis, efficatious academics, service, creativity, critical reflection and missions oriented. The educational philosophy is theistic, since God is the center of the epistemology.
Reality is knowing God and doing God’s will as declared in Deuteronomy 6: 4-9, “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates…” (Deut. 6:4-9). We should know who God is in order for us to obey his commandments and teachings. ? so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the LORD your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and command that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life (Deut. 6:2).
The importance of education is centered on propagating the Gospel in order to bring about spiritual transformation in persons and eventually in the society. In keeping with Psalms 78 : 5-7, which categorically stated that: He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our ancestors to teach their children, so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands? (Psalms 78: 5-7)
This transformation is seen in our dependence upon God and being empowered by the Holy Spirit to model biblical character, servanthood, collaboration, appreciation of God?s creation and evangelizing of the whole wide world. In order for this to take place the institution must foster team work, a clear organizational structure, and consultative decision making. The leadership of the institution cherishes charismatic interpersonal skills and dialogue in its operations and therefore fosters a community of faith that is compassionate, fellowshipping, worshipping, evangelistic, Christian service and interpersonal relations.
?All of this is to say that any vision projected is dependent upon providing a distinctive curriculum that will challenge contemporary thinking, equip missionary-minded ministers, elevate cultural awareness, and provide experiences for the implementation of a leadership style that will promote a bonding relationship between the pastor and the parish.? (Walker, 2003)
In summary ASCM theology of ministry includes the following values: belief in God, Holy Spirit empowerment, modeling biblical character, servant-hood collaboration, appreciative and evangelistic qualities that educational leaders must imbibe in order to succeed in leading higher education institutions. These values and qualities permeate the educational institution?s educational philosophy, vision, mission, goals, curriculum, and evaluation criteria, as well as the leader?s administrative and interpersonal skills, organizational structure and communication. The community is also impacted by these values as compassion, fellowship, worship, evangelism, Christian-service, smooth interpersonal relationships and spirituality are experienced. ASCM adheres to what Paul wrote to Timothy ?And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others? (2 Timothy 2:2, NIV).
